On March 19, 2026, the Yu Clan website, yuclan.com, went live, and I am glad to share it here. As someone who carries the surname 蔚, I feel a particular closeness to a site devoted to where our family name comes from.
A home with stories to tell
The site is called 蔚氏宗亲, the Yu Clan. Its home page opens with the line “一脉相承，蔚然成林” (one lineage, growing into a forest) and the motto “木有本 · 水有源”: every tree has its roots, every river its source. Devoted to the culture and family memory of the Yu clan across China, it is organised around four themes: our origins, family archives, shared values, and kinship and connection.
Readers can begin with the character 蔚 itself and learn why it is pronounced Yù when used as a surname. They can step into the genealogy library to identify editions of family registers and make sense of generation names. They can meet members of the clan recorded in historical sources, from Yu Zhaomin, a military officer of the Northern Song, and Yu Shou, a minister of the Ming dynasty, to the contemporary researcher Yu Baoguo. And they can follow journeys to ancestral places, such as the Yu clan stele at Pangang in Xihua, Henan, and a Yu family compound in Fenyang, Shanxi.
I particularly value its editorial principle: understand history through documents, and preserve memory through storytelling. Leads are tied to sources wherever possible, the memories of different branches are cherished, and what still awaits verification is treated with respect.
Designed for desktop and mobile
On a desktop, the home page unfolds across a landscape painting. The top navigation sets out sections on the clan’s background, its people and writing family history together, while the four themes sit side by side beneath the opening screen, so the structure of the site is clear at a glance.
On a phone, the navigation folds into a menu at the top right. The headline and two starting points, “Start with the character 蔚” and “Meet a person”, come first, followed by the landscape painting, while the themes rearrange into two columns for comfortable one-handed browsing.
One contribution at a time
The site also invites participation through its sections on writing family history together and building the community: clan members can begin with an old genealogy, a preface to a family register, an old photograph or an elder’s recollections. As the site puts it, “一人留一笔，合为传家书”: when each person adds a line, together we write a book worth passing down.
